Lifelong Learning offers several music programs that complement and supplement instruction during the traditional school day. These programs include the Private Music Lesson program, The String School of Franklin, the After School 4th/5th Grade Band and the 4th/5th Grade Honors Chorus. On Tuesday, January 28, the strings, band and chorus programs will host their mid-year recital.
The String School - Ms. Plouffe directs The String School with assistance from Mr. Balest (Beginner Violin, Bass and Intermediate Strings), Ms. Loukota (Beginner Violin, Viola, and Intermediate Strings), Ms. Schoen (Beginner Violin), Mr. Selby (Beginner Cello) and Ms. Woods (Beginner Violin, Preparatory Orchestra). There are approximately 127 students in The String School from grade 3 through 12.
The After School 4th/5th Grade Band - Mr. Donegan conducts the 4th/5th Grade Band with assistance from Mr. Halt (Beginner French Horn, Trombone), Ms. Halt (Beginner Flute), Mr. Kim (Beginner Saxophone, Beginner Clarinet and Beginner Flute),and Mr. Lewis (Beginner Clarinet).
The 4th/5th Grade Honors Chorus - Ms. MacMurray and Ms. Fuller serve as Co-Directors of the 4th/5th Grade Honors Chorus.
The Winter Recital begins at 5:30 PM on Tuesday, January 28 in the Thomas Mercer Auditorium at the Horace Mann Middle School. The public is invited to attend.

Franklin Public Schools had its first snow day of the 2013 - 2014 academic year on Friday, January 3. Despite the snow, Lifelong Learning has been busy with all things SUMMER. The Math Academy, Summer Music, Summer Art Institute, Solutions Summer Adventure, High School Academics, the High School Experience, Ready ... Set ... Kindergarten, Oceans of Fun, and STAR are returning with another summer of interesting courses.
Numerous course proposals for STAR have been submitted and are in the process of being reviewed. This summer STAR offerings will include: art, science, sports & fitness, crafts, STEM, cooking, adventures, and more.Watch for the course registration to go "live" after the middle of January. Adult Ed. spring courses went live last week and the registrations are rolling in. With 5 weekly Zumba classes, 4 weekly yoga classes and a variety of once-a-week classes including Kettlebells, weightlifting and Barre, fitness enthusiasts have a variety of choices from which to make their selections. The free Community Walking Program continues on Monday and Tuesday evenings from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM and on Wednesday evenings from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Come to the high school, check in at the LLL/Adult Ed. office, and enjoy a warm and interesting walk through the halls of the high school. Lifelong Learning has been busy even though the schools are closed. The Adult Education courses for the Winter Session, as well as the Spring session, are posted online. There are flip-books for both sessions that list and describe the courses. The Winter courses are available for registration. Registration for the Spring opens in January. Check out some of the newer offerings including: How to Run Your First 5K, Introduction to Weight Lifting for Women, Qigong, It's Personal: Creative Non-Fiction Writing Workshop and Selling Your Home Yourself, among others. There are numerous health/fitness/sport courses, photography, line dancing, foreign language, Early Childhood Educator professional development, ed2go courses, and food & wine tasting courses. There's something for everyone.

Lifelong Learning constantly works in the future, as well as the present. By that I mean that we are always working on learning initiatives for the upcoming semester and year, as we implement other programs/courses on a daily basis.
Yesterday we finished editing the Adult Education and Community Learning spring brochure. The brochure will be mailed to residents of Franklin, Bellingham and Wrentham. It includes a number of traditional offerings: Volleyball, Basketball, Yoga, Zumba, Language, Photography, Writing, Dance and more. Additionally, it features new courses offered in collaboration with businesses from Franklin and the surrounding communities: Kettlebells for Women with f.i.t. of Bellingham, Wine and Chocolate Tasting with Franklin Liquors and Green Mountain Chocolates, IPAs -- Hoppy Ales with Pour Richards, and Ladies Snowshoe/Trek and Ladies Light Hike with Nanci Cahalane and held in Foxboro.
We are in the process of receiving course proposals for the Summer Programs. Faculty and staff are proposing courses for students from kindergarten through grade 12. Their creativity and dedication make the Summer Program an enriching experience for all involved. Watch the Franklin Public Schools website in mid-January for registration information.

Franklin Public Schools provides after school music instruction on a variety of instruments, as well as in different settings.
The String School of Franklin, directed by Ms. Plouffe, rehearses on Monday afternoons at the Horace Mann Middle School. The learning opportunities include beginner string instruction on violin, viola, cello and bass. As the student advances in music knowledge and playing ability, he/she enrolls in the Intermediate Orchestra followed by the Preparatory Orchestra. The Repertory Orchestra, participation by audition, includes advanced string players from the greater Franklin community.
The After School 4th/5th Grade Band, under the direction of Mr. Donegan, rehearses on Tuesday afternoons at the Horace Mann Middle School. There is beginner instruction on flute, clarinet, saxophone (for 5th graders only), trumpet, and trombone. Fifth grade students, who studied a band instrument in the 4th grade, are eligible for participation in the Intermediate Band.
The 4th/5th Grade Honors Chorus, co-directed by Ms. MacMurray and Ms. Fuller, rehearses on Thursday afternoons at Oak Street Elementary School. Participation in this ensemble is limited to 60 students.
The Private Music Lesson program takes place at the high school on Monday through Thursday afternoons/evenings. The day of the week for lessons is determined by the faculty member's schedule. Instruction is available in voice, as well as the following instruments: bass, cello, clarinet, flute, guitar (acoustic, bass or electric), low brass, percussion, piano, saxophone, trombone, trumpet and tuba.Private instruction is open to students from 5th grade through adult.

June, 2014 marks the 50th graduation anniversary for the Franklin High School Class of 1964. This class was the second class to graduate from Franklin High School when it was located in the building currently known as the Horace Mann Middle School.
Members of the Class of 1964 are invited to process into the Field House as part of the graduation ceremonies of the Class of 2014. The presence of these Golden Graduates reinforces the threads that link the Franklin community with the Franklin Public Schools.
